Mr Belding from Saved by the Bell Surprised Me with Energy

We all know the show Saved by the Bell : Zach Morris AC Slater, Kelly… oh Kelly. I had the opportunity to go to a private event at Stockton College where Dennis Hasking (Mr Belding) was giving a 2 hour intimate open talk forum. Now, since the days of Saved by the Bell, you really haven’t heard much surrounding Haskins.  The portrayal of him post Saved by the Bell years can be summed up like this:

“Old overweight man trying to re-live the good old days by partying with college kids”. So yes, the media has portrayed Belding in this fashion. To be honest, I kinda fell for it to.  If you do a google search of Belding, you’ll find the obvious saved by the bell pictures, but also him partying with girls half his age.  So here I am going to this event with a semi slanted opinion of the guy. Well, don’t believe everything your read .

This event was a very intimate open forum, pretty much all questions were asked. What surprised me the most about Dennis is how well rounded he is. Of course, he got his major break with Saved by the Bell, but the story behind him was quite amazing. Very close to his father, who suffered a stroke 3 years ago. For anyone that has a close family member with a stroke, you know the devastation is causes (my father had a stroke 5 years ago). He also discussed some very funny and some sad aspects of Saved by the Bell. The Jimmy Fallon show tried to get a Saved by the Bell Reunion, but Tiffany and Screech passed. Screech as going the angle of “being a jerk to get ahead”, and its unfortunately working. Tiffany is something I wasn’t expecting, maybe something to dig deeper. What I didnt know is that Jennie Garth (ex 90210) read for the role of Kelly, in which Tiffany gets. Then you fast forward a couple years, and they are all on the same show, 90210.

The overall theme to Haskins event is how the “dots in your life” all somehow connect. The funny part is you never see the connection until you look back. His energy that he provided to this event, his ability to relate to all different age levels showed me a side to Haskins that is unfortunately no covered by the media. In short, before you judge, cut through the cutter and dont be easily swayed by what’s out there.

5 Hour Energy Drink – Now Whats Next?

The need to increase energy levels or to have an energy boost has always been around. What has changed is the marketing explosion of this over the past 20 years. What first catered to athletes and body builders, is now a mass market product to provide you energy regardless of your activity.

When Red Bull came to market, the mass market embraced and exploded the brand. With Red Bull came a ton of products trying to mimic Red Bull’s success. Most of these imitators failed, while a select few continue to grow (and even pass in market share). At a time when energy drinks were getting bigger (Red Bull from 8.4oz to 16.9 oz, Monster’s 16oz can), one company changed the game completely by going smaller.  The 5 hour energy drink changed the landscape by providing the increase energy boost by going smaller.  As with any innovation in the marketplace, you face resistance. When five hour energy came to market, the initial thought was “this doesn’t stand a chance”. What the market forgets is when a product works, add some innovation behind it, the consumers will follow.  That’s what happened.

Now, the top energy “drink” brands are trying to play catchup. Monster comes out with “Hitman”, RedBull comes out with their 2oz energy shot.  Problem is , you have a pricing conflict. You can pay 2.99 for a retail 8.4 oz of Redbull, or you can pay $2.99 for a 2oz Redbull shot. There’s a branding issue here where the consumers are not fully sold on energy drink brands coming out with energy shots. You can see why 5 Hour Energy Drink is the leader of the energy shots.

Since history tends to repeat itself, the same cycle that occurred with Red Bull is now occurring with 5 Hour Energy. The flood of 5 Hour Energy imitating products in the United States increased at a dramatic rate. Even with the flood of products to market, 5 Hour Energy continues its climb within the energy shot category. Unfortunately, what’s been missing in the marketplace since 5 Hour Energy launched in 2004 is innovation. There has been little to no innovation in the energy space. FIXX Extreme was created to change this.

Similar to 5 hour energy, we felt the need to go smaller in size, but more potent in strength. We were able to include 400mg of caffeine in a one teaspoon shot. In other words, approximately the amount of caffeine in a venti starbucks coffee is packed into a one teaspoon of FIXX Extreme. Add in some additional ingredients, remove the sugar and calories (zero in each), you now have a product that delivers the energy in a newly innovative and effective way.
